Event Review - DIY Search Engine Optimisation 2
Posted: 09-Nov-06

What a subject this is! A whole new language to learn, or at least to be aware of, so that you can ensure that your website is gaining the maximum exposure.

Most interesting is the link between SEO and site accessibility. Huh? (I hear you think!). Meaning that work done on the accessibility of your site will have an affect on your search engine friendliness. Many accessibility options have to be built in from the ground upwards so a well designed accessible site will be automatically very search engine friendly.

Thankfully this goes both ways, work done on making your site more SE friendly will also help on several of the vital accessibility elements.

So, another very successful eBusiness Forum event this morning where people just kept arriving and boosting the numbers. 48 people in total listened to Peter Banks from datapartners (and Director of eBusiness Forum Ltd) work the Home page of a volunteered website first using the free Instant Position software and then talking us through one of the 'paid for' sections of this site that enables more thorough optimisation. The software was Instant Position to be found at www.instantposition.com

What did we learn? The importance of keywords and how to check they are the words used in searches. The different elements of the site that are monitored by the Search Engines and their relative importance. We noted the comments the software made about the keywords presence within the webpage, saw how to easily make changes that affected the individual and overall score and of course the visual 'clap-o-meter'.

Peter also talked about the subjective element of Google rankings. Google are very environmentally aware and they do take this into account when ranking sites.

We discussed many issues around search engine friendliness, heard more tips than we could write down and generally had plenty to take-away-and-do.

As a follow up in the Spring eBusiness Forum will be running a training course on Search Engine Optimisation at which you can spend a day working on your own website with tuition, help and tips from Peter Banks and Catherine Turner. More details will be posted on the site and sent out to all by email in due course.

Thanks to the Minerva Centre for their hospitality, to Peter Banks and Edd Hall for their presentation and to all those who attended and asked lots of good questions.
