| Event Review - Microsoft Top Tips for Internet Security and MS Office |
Posted: 05-Jul-05
Well, where were you? Today's event at Writtle College was a treat, despite a few anxious moments wondering if Gary Garnett, our presenter from Microsoft was going to beat the traffic in time!
Fortunately Bob Axford was ready to step in and show us a film to explain the benefits of registering for the DTI eCommerce Awards which are open for registrations until the end of July.
After an early coffee break to allow Gary time to set up, we were given a brief run through of Microsoft Office and a reminder of the need for us to use Smart Tags (work with them rather than against them!), Styles and Formatting, the use of Pivot Tables in Excel, the Business Contact Manager in Outlook and its integration with the Word Mail Merge system. Then a top-speed run through of how to produce a web site using FrontPage and include the html flyer he had just made in Publisher!
We learnt how to hack into each others systems to find out the passwords stored! So the lesson learnt was some golden password rules:
use alpha numeric mix numbers must be in the middle, not at the end of a word don't use a word that is in the dictionary use a mix of upper and lower case but don't put the first letter in upper case
www.bCentral.com for all security needs plus case studies
Microsoft have new and FREE antispyware which prevents spies getting into the system whereas others tend to find what has already arrived! However, it is always advisable to have at least 2 spyware programmes installed.
We were then shown the benefits for all businesses, however small, in using a Server with Microsoft Small Business Server software.
Clement Nettey from Prompt Cars & Taxis won the prize draw of a copy of MS Office 2003 Small Business Edition which was kindly donated by Microsoft.
The tips and tricks for Microsoft Office are below although they do not necessarily include the items demonstrated by Gary. Gary's Security presentation is also linked.
